2. Do not confuse stress with anxiety. Take note of your energy and body language. Anxiety is unhealthy and feels like static in your nervous system. Stress is the mountain you need to climb. Stress can make you anxious and this increased anxiety will impede your performance.

3. Do not confuse stress with fear. Real fear is essential for survival. Real fear helps you deal with stress effectively. By feeling your fear, you know what to do in order to be successful in each new, stressful situation.

4. Do feel the stress. Yikes, yes, feel the stress. “Oh my, there is a mountain to climb. How do I get to the top?” Acknowledge the stressful situation and feel what is happening in your body and heart. Stay with yourself through the growth process.

5. Do not get stuck in helplessness. Reality is the best antidote for stressful situations. Take a look at the situation and see what is real. What, where, who, how high and so on. Entering the reality of a stressful situation keeps you from entering helplessness.

6. Learn to reduce your anxiety. The way around the concrete can be seen if you reduce your anxiety. Stress often triggers irrational, conditioned anxieties you have not overcome. This means you need to learn better coping skills. Learning how to reduce your anxiety is the best self-improvement action you can take in any stressful situation.

7. Learn the new skills and behaviors that you need to be successful. This is a given, you will always need to learn something new. 8. Deal with resistances effectively. Stress forces you to deal with issues in your past you have avoided. Unhealthy knee jerk reactions and rigid thinking are sure to rise up from your unconscious mind. Dealing with your past learning history effectively improves your mental health, sexual health and physical health. This is probably the number one reason stress is good for you. You have to clean up your act in order to move through stress successfully. Otherwise, you might end up as a fat couch potato with a sexual dysfunction or a serious disease!

9. Meet your stress as an equal. If you take the actions above you will cope with the new, stressful reality in an equal and effective manner. It does not matter how long it takes you to reach the top of the mountain. Keep breathing and keep climbing. You know you can do it.

10. Assert yourself in proper ways. Sometimes, just being assertive is enough to solve stress. Assertiveness Training is an essential skill that needs to be taught in the schools, colleges and graduate schools! Learn to say, “No” when needed.
